Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait Fishing Report – June 8, 2016

Water level normal and fairly clear, water temperature in the upper 70’s. Bass hitting on frogs and senkos with catches of 10 of more fairly common. 13 fish over 5 lbs checked in this week topped by a 7.5 lunker caught by Jim Brazee. Pickerel, catfish, and bowfin hitting well on large and xl minnows. Nice strings of crappie being taken on small minnows and jigs over brush piles in 8-12 ft of water. Bluegills biting on cricket and red worms on sandy banks.

Chickahominy Lake Fishing Report – June 1, 2016

Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water temperatures were in the high 70’s to low 80’s in the lower main lake and higher in the major creeks on Wednesday (6/1/2016). The lake level was about 4 inches above the top of the dam. The water was medium brown and slightly to moderately cloudy in the central lower lake, with more murky water on downwind shorelines and in some creeks.

Most blue cats and bullheads were on flats and channel edges in the main lake and scattered in creeks and hitting live minnows and cut bait. Some crappie were scattered in major creek channels, some were on cypress knees and along shorelines in the main lake, and most were accumulated on mid-depth wood cover and along drop-offs in the main lake. Active crappie were hitting live minnows, Wright Bait Co. and Southern Pro curlytail jigs, small tubes, Kalin crappie scrubs, and small swim baits. Small to medium yellow perch were scattered or in loose aggregates on some main lake flats and in channels and on flats in major creeks and were hitting live minnows, small swim baits, and small jigs. Small and an occasional medium bluegill and shellcracker were scattered or loosely aggregated along some shorelines in major creeks and in the main lake and were hitting flies, small jigs, Nikko nymphs, small swim baits, and live worms. Some bass, pickerel, and bowfin were along shorelines, on lily pad and hydrilla flats, and along drop-offs in the major creeks and the main lake. When active, bass and pickerel were hitting live minnows, spinnerbaits, swim baits, stick worms, crank baits, jerk baits, and jigs.

Fishing with Capt. Conway, Jack and Rob Dietrich and Chuck Narozniak had 9 crappie. Lynn and Margarita Wolverton and Sue Gill had 11 bluegill, 8 crappie, 1 white perch, 1 striper, 1 blue cat, 1 pickerel, and 1 bass. Karen Anderson and Carolyn Conway had 65 bluegill, 1 shellcracker, 1 flier, 1 crappie, and 1 bass. Roy Lee had 1 bluegill, 6 crappie, 1 yellow perch, 1 pickerel, and 5 bass.

Ed Allens Boats and Bait LLC fishing report – May 25, 2016

Fishing continues to be excellent in spite of the non-stop rains during May. Lake level slightly up and fairly clear. Water temperature in the mid 60’s and rising. Bass continue to be hitting well with best results coming on frogs and senkos. 44 bass over 5lbs have already been recorded in May despite the terrible weather conditions. Pickerel, catfish, and bow fin are also doing well on XL minnows and spinner type lures. Bluegill and shell cracker action is also good with many people reporting limits of the popular pan fish.

Ed Allens Boats and Bait LLC fishing report – May 17, 2016

Lake level normal and clear. Water temperature i the low 70’s. Fishing report this week excellent in spite of daily rains and weekend cold front. Sundays open tournament was great with 15 boats participated with 7 boats weighing in over 10lbs. 1st place went to Paul and Andy Shattuck with a bag of 18.33lbs. 2nd place went to Steven Wagner with a bag of 18.1lbs. 3rd place went to DJ Braley with a bag of 15.5lbs. 7 fish checked in over 5lbs with the big fish weighing 5.9lbs.

Most of bass are in the post spawn mode and are being caught on senkos, spinner baits, and frogs. 12 reported this week over 5lbs to bring the total for May to 27 over 5lbs. Pickerel, bowfin, and catfish still good on XL minnows. Bluegill action excellent on red worms and crickets and should peak in the full moon.

The lake level was about 4 inches above the top of the dam. The water was medium brown and slightly to moderately cloudy in the central lower lake, with more murky water on downwind shorelines and in some creeks.

Most blue cats and bullheads were on flats in the main lake and scattered in creeks and hitting live minnows and cut bait. Some crappie were still scattered in major creek channels, some were on cypress knees and along shorelines in the main lake, and most were accumulating on mid-depth wood cover and along drop-offs in the main lake. Active crappie were hitting live minnows, Wright Bait Co. and Southern Pro curlytail jigs, small tubes, Kalin crappie scrubs, and small swim baits. Small to medium yellow perch were scattered or in loose aggregates on some main lake flats and in channels and on flats in major creeks and were hitting live minnows, small swim baits, and small jigs. Small to medium bluegill and shellcracker were scattered along some shorelines in major creeks and in the main lake and were hitting flies, small jigs, and live worms. Bluegill should accumulate over the next week for a spawn on the full moon. Some bass, pickerel, and bowfin were along shorelines, on lily pad flats, and along drop-offs in the major creeks and the main lake. When active, bass and pickerel were hitting live minnows, spinnerbaits, swim baits, stick worms, crank baits, jerk baits, and jigs.

Fishing with Capt. Conway, Mickey Cleveland had 28 bluegill, 1 shellcracker, 13 crappie, and 2 yellow perch.

The lake level was about 8 to 10 inches above the top of the dam. The water was medium brown and slightly to moderately cloudy in the central lower lake, with more murky water on downwind shorelines and in some creeks.

Most blue cats and bullheads were on flats and channel edges in the main lake and scattered in creeks, and were hitting live minnows and cut bait. Crappie action was fluctuating, with scattered fish and loose aggregates in creek channels and in main lake feeding areas. Active crappie were hitting live minnows, Wright Bait Co. and Southern Pro curlytail jigs, small tubes, Kalin crappie scrubs, and small swim baits. Small to medium yellow perch were scattered or in loose aggregates on some main lake flats and in channels and on flats in major creeks and were hitting live minnows, small swim baits, and small jigs. The lake level was about even with the top of the dam. The water was light brown and very slightly cloudy in the central lower lake.

Most blue cats and bullheads were on flats in the main lake and scattered in creeks, and were hitting live minnows and cut bait. Crappie action was fluctuating, with scattered fish and loose aggregates apparently moving out of major creeks toward main lake feeding areas. Active crappie were hitting live minnows, Wright Bait Co. and Southern Pro curlytail jigs, small tubes, Kalin crappie scrubs, and small swim baits. Small to medium yellow perch were scattered or in loose aggregates on some main lake flats and in channels and on flats in major creeks and were hitting live minnows, small swim baits, and small jigs. Small to medium bluegill and shellcracker were starting to accumulate along some shorelines in major creeks and were hitting small swim baits and jigs. Some bass, pickerel, and bowfin were along shorelines, on lily pad flats, and along drop-offs in the main lake and major creeks. When active, bass and pickerel were hitting live minnows, spinnerbaits, swim baits, stick worms, crank baits, jerk baits, and jigs.

Fishing with Capt. Conway, Mickey Cleveland had 17 crappie, 1 yellow perch, 5 pickerel, and 1 bass. Capt. Bill Buck and Malcolm Turnbull had 4 crappie, 5 yellow perch, 2 shellcracker, 3 roach minnows, and 3 pickerel.
