Chickahominy Lake Fishing Report – August 12, 2015

Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water temperatures were in the low 80’s in the main lake on Wednesday (8/12/2015). The lake level was several inches above the top of the dam. The water was light brown and moderately cloudy in the lower lake.

Blue cats and a few bullheads were scattered throughout the lake and were hitting live minnows and cut bait. Moderate numbers of crappie were in loose schools in the main lake on deeper flats and channel edges, usually at depths of 6 to 12 feet. A few crappie were scattered singly or in small schools on shallow to mid-depth cypress knees, wood cover, and shoreline weed beds in the main lake and in mouths of major creeks. Active crappie were hitting live minnows, Wright Bait Co. curlytail jigs, small tubes, Kalin crappie scrubs, and small swim baits. Some small to medium yellow perch were scattered on main lake shoreline flats and were hitting live minnows and small jigs. Some nice bluegill and shellcracker along with numerous smaller bluegill were in small loose aggregates along shorelines in the main lake and were hitting live crickets and worms, flies, and small tubes and jigs. Some bass and pickerel were on lily pad flats and along shorelines in lower reaches of major creeks and in shallow bays and some shorelines in the main lake, while other bass and a few pickerel were on channel edges in the main lake. Bass and pickerel were hitting live minnows, spinnerbaits, swim baits, stick worms, and jigs.

Fishing with Capt. Conway, Curt Heimbach had 5 bluegill, 8 crappie, 4 bass, 1 blue cat, and 1 gar. Karen Anderson had 14 bluegill, 1 shellcracker, 2 crappie, and 1 gar. Joel and Josh Silverman had 29 bluegill. Marian and Sam Moody had 8 bluegill, 1 shellcracker, 10 crappie, 1 roach minnow, 1 striped bass, and 1 gar. Tom Porter had 8 bluegill and 9 crappie.

The lake level was about even with the top of the dam. The water was moderately brown and moderately cloudy in the lower lake.

Fishing with Capt. Conway, John Settle had 5 crappie and 2 fliers. Terry Rivers had 51 bluegill and 1 bass. Capt. Bill Buck and Tom Porter had 53 bluegill, 3 yellow perch, and 1 bass.

The lake level was about even with the top of the dam. The water was moderately brown and moderately cloudy in the lower lake.

Blue cats were scattered throughout the lake and creeks and were hitting live minnows and cut bait. Moderate numbers of crappie were in loose schools in the main lake on deeper flats and channel edges, usually at depths of 6 to 12 feet. The lake level was about 6 inches above the top of the dam. The water was moderately brown and quite cloudy in the lower lake.

Blue cats were scattered throughout the lake and creeks and were hitting live minnows and cut bait. Moderate numbers of crappie were in loose schools in the main lake on deeper flats and channel edges, usually at depths of 6 to 12 feet. A few crappie were scattered singly or in small schools on shallow to mid-depth cypress knees, wood cover, and shoreline weed beds in the main lake and in mouths of major creeks. Active crappie were hitting live minnows, Wright Bait Co. curlytail jigs, small tubes, Kalin crappie scrubs, and small swim baits. The lake level was slightly above the top of the dam. The water was moderately brown and quite cloudy in the lower lake.

Some crappie were in loose schools in the main lake on flats and channel edges, frequently near creek mouths, usually at depths of 6 to 12 feet. The lake level was slightly above the top of the dam. The water was moderately brown and very slightly cloudy in the lower lake.

Blue cats were scattered throughout the lake and creeks and were hitting live minnows and cut bait. Crappie were in several different patterns and were biting moderately aggressively. Some crappie were in loose schools in the main lake on flats and channel edges, frequently near creek mouths, usually at depths of 6 to 12 feet. A moderate number of crappie were scattered or in small schools on shallow to mid-depth cypress knees, wood cover, and shoreline weed beds in the main lake and in mouths of major creeks. A few crappie were in the major creeks scattered along the channels. Active crappie were hitting live minnows, Wright Bait Co. curlytail jigs, small tubes, Kalin crappie scrubs, and small swim baits. Some nice yellow perch were in loose aggregates in some creeks and on main lake shoreline flats and were hitting live minnows and small jigs. Bluegill were still accumulated near shorelines in some areas of major creeks and the main lake and were hitting live crickets and worms, flies, and small jigs. Some bass and pickerel were on lily pad flats and along shorelines in major creeks and in shallow bays in the main lake and were hitting live minnows, spinnerbaits, swim baits, stick worms, and jigs.

Fishing with Capt. Conway, Mickey Cleveland had 18 bluegill, 6 crappie, 1 bass, and 1 blue cat. Karen Anderson and Maggie Billingslea had 31 bluegill, 1 shellcracker, 3 crappie, 4 yellow perch, and 1 bass. Tom Porter had 27 bluegill, 1 shellcracker, 6 crappie, and 1 yellow perch.

The lake level was about six inches above the top of the dam. The water was moderately brown and slightly cloudy in the lower lake.

Blue cats were scattered throughout the lake and creeks and were hitting live minnows and cut bait. Crappie were in several different patterns and were biting moderately aggressively. A fair number of crappie were in loose schools in the main lake on flats, frequently near creek mouths, usually at depths of 8 to 12 feet. Some crappie were on shallow to mid-depth wood cover in the main lake and in major creeks. A few crappie were in the major creeks scattered along the channels and near spawning areas. Active crappie were hitting live minnows, Wright Bait Co. curlytail jigs, small tubes, and small swim baits. Some nice yellow perch were in loose aggregates in some creeks and on main lake flats and were hitting live minnows and small jigs. Bluegill were starting to accumulate near shorelines in some areas of major creeks and the main lake and were hitting flies and small jigs. Some bass and pickerel were on lily pad flats in the backs of creeks and in shallow bays in the main lake and were hitting live minnows, spinnerbaits, swim baits, stick worms, and jigs.

Fishing with Capt. Conway, Bob and Jackie Maybury and Sharie Marwitz had 2 bluegill, 17 crappie, 1 bass, and 1 pickerel. Terry Rivers had 23 bluegill, 1 warmouth, 3 crappie, 1 yellow perch, 1 roach minnow, and 1 bass. Tom Porter had 13 bluegill, 10 crappie, and 4 yellow perch.

The lake level was about six inches above the top of the dam. The water was moderately brown and slightly cloudy in the lower lake.

Blue cats were scattered throughout the lake and creeks and were hitting live minnows and cut bait. Crappie were in several different patterns and were biting moderately aggressively. A fair number of crappie were in schools in the main lake on flats, frequently near creek mouths, usually at depths of 8 to 12 feet. Some crappie were on shallow to mid-depth wood cover in the main lake and in major creeks. A moderate number of crappie were in the major creeks scattered along the channels. A moderate number of crappie were aggregated near spawning areas, usually in creeks. Active crappie were hitting live minnows, Wright Bait Co. curlytail jigs, small tubes, small swim baits, and small suspending jerk baits. Some nice yellow perch were in loose aggregates in some creeks and hitting live minnows and small jigs. Bluegill were starting to accumulate near shorelines in many major creeks and were hitting flies and small jigs. Some bass and pickerel were on lily pad flats in the creeks and in shallow bays in the main lake and were hitting live minnows, spinnerbaits, swim baits, stick worms, and jigs.

Fishing with Capt. Conway, Pete and Randahl Pedersen had 10 crappie, 8 yellow perch, 2 fliers, and 3 pickerel. Mickey Cleveland had 16 crappie, 1 flier, and 3 pickerel. Tom Porter had 5 bluegill, 1 flier, 7 crappie, and 1 yellow perch.
